BigQuery vs. Snowflake: What I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before Our First Data Bill

I still remember the exact moment our CEO asked me to "just set up a data warehouse" three years ago. We were a five-person startup, and I was wearing the hat of backend engineer, DevOps person, and apparently now data infrastructure guy. I picked Snowflake because it sounded ent...

Running 8,764 Sandboxes in Production Taught Me What Sandboxing Really Costs

I spent three days last month debugging why a CI/CD pipeline kept failing silently on GitHub Actions. The logs showed nothing. The code worked locally. It worked on my coworker's machine. When I finally SSH'd into the runner and manually ran the same command, it succeeded immedia...

Stop Blaming Your Network: Why Kafka Cross-VPC Failures Are Actually an Addressing Crisis

I spent three hours last month debugging what looked like a textbook networking failure. A Kafka consumer in one AWS VPC couldn't pull messages from a cluster in another. Telnet worked. Security groups were open. The routing table looked clean. Everything pointed to "network is b...

The $725 Billion Bet That Keeps Me Up At Night (And Why I'm Not Convinced Anyone Has a Plan B)

I was in a client meeting last month when someone casually mentioned we should "leverage AI" to cut our infrastructure costs. I nodded along, but internally I was thinking: have you *seen* what running these models actually costs? We'd be trading one capex nightmare for another....

Why I Finally Stopped Overthinking Container Deployments and Just Used Lightsail

I spent three years overthinking my deployment strategy. EC2 with auto-scaling groups, ECS clusters, Kubernetes on EKS, I'd read every architectural decision document and convinced myself that anything less was "not production-ready." Then I deployed WordPress on a single Lightsai...

The Enterprise Security Trap: Why I'm Skeptical of "One Tool to Rule Them All"

I got paged at 2 AM last month because someone in our organization created an S3 bucket with public access. It wasn't malicious, just a junior developer who didn't know better. By the time our security team noticed it through CloudTrail logs and manual audits, it had been exposed...

I Got 47 Recruiter Messages Last Week, Here's What I Learned About My Own Resume

Last Tuesday, I posted a single comment on a GitHub discussion about LLM optimization. By Wednesday morning, my inbox had 12 new recruiter messages. By Friday, I'd hit double digits again. The kicker? None of them had actually read my profile. One wanted me to relocate to the Bay...

When Your Infrastructure Becomes a Silent Killer: Why Network Debugging is a Superpower

Last month, I spent three hours staring at a Terraform apply output that refused to budge past 10 minutes. The AWS EC2 instances were there, healthy by every metric AWS could tell me about. The security groups allowed traffic. The IAM roles were correct. Everything looked fine. E...

Stop Pretending Your AWS Bill is Honest: The Database Chargeback Problem I've Been Ignoring

I got an email last month from our finance team asking which team owned the $4,200 RDS bill. I stared at it for a solid minute before responding with something honest: "I don't know, and I don't think anyone does." We run four separate applications on a single SQL Server instance...

Stop Waiting for CloudFormation to Tell You Everything's Fine

I was sitting in a standup last month when our DevOps lead mentioned we'd spent 45 minutes waiting for a CloudFormation stack update to complete. The infrastructure change itself took maybe 30 seconds. The rest of the time? CloudFormation running stabilization checks, making sure...
