Why I Finally Stopped Dismissing Data Engineering as "Just Plumbing"

I spent three years building React applications at a mid-sized fintech company in Islamabad before it hit me: I had no idea how the data I was rendering actually got there. I'd ping endpoints, get JSON back, display it. Done. But one morning, our entire dashboard went blank. Not...

The Failure Mode Nobody's Testing For: Why AWS's Zonal Shift Changed How I Think About Resilience

I was on-call at 2am last month when something weird happened. Our error rate spiked, but only for one service. The zone that hosted it wasn't down, it was just… slow. The health checks passed. The circuit breakers didn't trip. So we didn't do anything, because the alarm threshold...

I Stopped Writing Code and Started Making Decisions, Here's What Changed

Two years into my first job, I could ship features in my sleep. A Jira ticket would land in my lap with a wireframe attached, acceptance criteria spelled out in bullet points, and I'd have it merged by EOD. Add a filter here, fix a query there, bump a version number. It felt prod...

Why I Finally Stopped Believing My Code Speaks for Itself

A year ago, I shipped a system that cut our API response time by 40%. I was genuinely proud of it, the architecture was clean, the queries optimized, the caching strategy elegant. I mentioned it once in standup and moved on. Six months later, during promotion discussions, I realiz...

Learning DevOps in Public: Why I'm Finally Doing This Too

I spent three years as a full-stack developer in Islamabad before I realized I was doing DevOps without a safety net. I'd deploy to production using SSH, manage databases through hastily written scripts, and pray that my server configuration would survive the next restart. When s...

Why Game Jams Matter More to Your Career Than You Think

Last month, I spent a weekend building a terrible weather app in Remix. It worked, barely, the API calls were inefficient, the UI was passable, and I shipped it anyway. That's when it hit me: I had more fun in those 48 hours than I'd had in three months of my day job. There was no...

When the Platform You Built Your Career On Puts You in a Box

I got rejected from the WordPress.org plugin directory once. Not for a bad plugin, for one that worked too well. The reviewer said my code was "doing theme work" and needed to be restructured. I remember staring at that email thinking: I just moved this exact function into a plugi...

The AI Hiring Gap Nobody's Talking About (And Why Indonesian Devs Should Care)

Last month, I was reviewing CVs for a contract role at a startup in Karachi. I noticed something odd: every single global applicant had "AI" or "LLM" plastered somewhere on their resume. The local candidates, equally skilled, if not more, barely mentioned it. I didn't think much of...

The Discipline Advantage: Why Your First Career Might Be Your Best Teacher in Tech

I was having coffee with a senior engineer last week when he mentioned he'd been coding for fifteen years and still felt like he was "figuring things out." I laughed and told him about the time I shipped a feature that worked great in development but melted under actual user load...

Why I Finally Stopped Guessing and Started Logging Like a Professional

Three weeks ago, I spent an entire afternoon debugging a payment processing issue that shouldn't have taken more than twenty minutes. I opened DevTools, stared at network tabs, added random `console.log()` statements, and basically just... guessed. Refreshed. Guessed again. It wa...
