Why I Finally Stopped Shipping "AI Agent Demos" and Started Building Actual Systems

Last month, I shipped what I thought was a production-ready agent. It worked flawlessly in my notebook, impressed everyone in a demo, and then immediately started hemorrhaging money the moment real users touched it. The agent would retry failed tool calls endlessly, each retry bu...

Stop Treating AI Learning Like a Checklist: What Actually Works in 2026

I started learning AI the wrong way. It was late 2024, I was frustrated watching my peers ship AI features faster than me, and I threw myself at every free course I could find. I did a week of Andrew Ng's fundamentals, jumped into a Hugging Face course on Transformers I wasn't re...

I Built an LLM Feature Without Token Limits. It Cost Me $900 in Two Days.

Last month, I deployed a customer support chatbot that seemed innocuous enough. Simple retrieval, straightforward responses, nothing fancy. By day two, the AWS bill had spiked by nearly a grand. I spent an hour debugging before I realized the problem: I wasn't limiting conversati...

Model Distillation Isn't Magic, It's Expensive Pattern Copying

I've been following the AI drama around Moonshot's Kimi, and like most developers, I initially accepted the surface story: you take a smart model, pour its outputs into a cheaper one, and boom, you've got a budget version of the expensive thing. Except that's completely wrong, and...

Stop Dismissing Java for AI, I Was Wrong About This

Every time someone mentions building an AI feature at work, my brain defaults to Python. It's almost automatic. I've spent the last few years watching the AI explosion happen in Python-first communities, and I've been quietly reinforcing this bias in my own projects. But last wee...

I Was Wrong About Open-Source AI Models, Qwen3.8 Max Just Proved It

I spent the last two years telling anyone who'd listen that open-source AI models were a "nice experiment" but fundamentally limited for production work. Chat applications? Sure, run them locally. But serious agentic tasks, the kind where an AI needs to plan, use tools, recover...

I Finally Did the Math on Self-Hosted AI, and It Changed What I'll Recommend to Clients

Last month, a client asked me the question that's haunting every development team right now: "Can we switch to open-source AI models and cut our API bills in half?" I nodded and said I'd look into it. Honestly, I was expecting to come back with a "technically possible but not wor...

`finish_reason=length` Returned Empty Content, and the Error Message Lied to Me

The error said the model returned empty content. I assumed the response stream had broken. It hadn't. What I Was Chasing (Wrong Direction) My multi-agent content pipeline hit a wall: on...

Grounded Search Agents: Microsoft Foundry + Azure AI Search + Cosmos DB + Function Calling

Why "search" isn't enough anymore A plain RAG pipeline, embed a query, hit a vector index, stuff the top-k chunks into a prompt, works fine for a single-turn FAQ bot. It falls apart the m...
